Start with the experience you want to repeat: an unhurried breakfast by the water, a walk through a historic neighbourhood, or a full day outdoors. Choose one priority for each day and leave enough time to get there without rushing. A shorter list often makes space for the moments you remember.
Compare door-to-door travel time, not just the flight. Add airport transfers, ferry connections, check-in time and the final journey to your accommodation. Before paying, confirm the last connection of the day with the operator and leave a buffer between separately booked services.
Write down accommodation, local transport, meals and the activities you actually plan to do. Keep a separate allowance for transfers and changes of plan. Compare the total for the same number of nights and the same room arrangement; a low nightly rate can conceal a costly journey.
Pair outdoor plans with an indoor or low-key alternative. Save booking references, accommodation details and an offline map before departure. Check current opening arrangements with the attraction itself rather than treating an older itinerary as a timetable.
Use established paths, follow local signs, ask before photographing people and keep your distance from wildlife. Carry out what you bring in. A considerate visit starts with the rules of the place you are visiting.
